Mad Men

Watch out hexagons, a new obsession is here!

Last night I watched the very first two episodes of the AMC drama, Mad Men. It was so great that all I want to do is pack up my hexagons and start sewing Dior inspired dresses from the late 50's-early 60's. It has also been a very effective motivational tool for doing myself up more!! ..good thing I just bought some new make-up!

If you love clothing and haven't found Mad Men yet's time!

Bows and bows..

Everywhere you shop right now there seems to be a plethora of designs using bows. While it can be a bit overwhelming ..especially while wandering your local mall, some of what you can purchase in this enthusiastic, trendy shape is adorable.

Beccy and I bought almost the same earrings this season two different stores. We equally love our rhinestone bows!

More fun hexagons!

They may be time consuming, but they sure make me happy!!

Craft table

So this is really my dining room table ..and you have seen it before. What is funny about this table is that it is hardly ever used for dinner. What happens is I get a day off, start a project, buy new supplies for the project, receive some mail, pile it on the project supplies, write a letter, loose it on the table somewhere ..then I realize that the table is, once again, completely covered with my crap, and I clean it off.

Bright Trees

This photo, but David Benjamin Sherry, got me really excited to try new things with Photoshop. I absolutely love color! ..and transforming relatively normal photographs into crazy colors makes me giddy!

Check back for some upcoming color trials!!

So I have been completely crazy about hexagons lately. I checked out a book on vintage quilts at the library a week ago, and one tiny little template turned into hours of cutting out hexagons :)

Here are some photos of my progress so far ...and how I am putting them together.

To make these:
•create a hexagon template that is the size you need of the finished hexagon, cut out a few of those on card stock.
•add a generous 1/4" seam allowance to the original template, cut one or two of these out on card stock.
•apply tape to the back of the larger template and cut, cut, cut your favorite fabrics ...don't worry, this is fun!
•iron the cut-out pieces over the smaller template ...a very tedious task, watch out for your fingers!
•sew all the wonderful hexagons together starting with the central one and working your way out.

If you are having trouble with getting this started, let me know and I will send you some templates of my own!

Vintage hats and fur ...Chicago?

I love this photograph by Vivian Maier ...It's just what I am feeling right now. I have a vintage inspiration cloud floating around me. I love the the women's outfits, from the updo's to the hats, to the large fur. I love their nonchalance, and the city scape behind them. I like the woman working in the window, and the gentle drape of her satin shirt.

Awesome! Awesome! Awesome!

Last night Ryan and I went to the regions renowned sushi spot, Takashi, and we couldn't have been happier with our meal. We were seated at the chefs counter Takashi's counter, and after hours of the most amazing knife show and artistic edibles we drove home full and a little high on life (or was that raw fish?).

Hands down, best eating experience in Utah to date!!

...I can't wait to go back!

Driving Home

This is what yesterday's drive home looked like ..I am looking forward to these same mountains tonight!

Christmas in the woods

This image is from our Ogden hike, but I had to leave it out of the last posting because it was so unique. We came across this decorated tree about a mile up the hike. Someone went to a lot of trouble to make sure that even the woodland creatures had a decorated tree!

More Happy Holidays ...from the woods of Utah!

Winter Hiking: Ogden, Utah

Instead of getting fully out of the inversion and heading to Wyoming as we had planned to do, we took a drive north to Ogden and did some winter hiking. For our adventure we chose a hike called Waterfall Canyon and followed it with dinner at Rooster's, a local Brew Pub. All in all a good Saturday, though we didn't make it high enough to get out of the pollution.

Dingo loves group photos!

Sooo ..this is one of the not so great things about where I live.

Oh you say, what a wonderful view of the mountains!
Yes, I say, it really is.

..but look a little closer and you will see that the coating of grey, muck is not actually a nice visual perspective, but a grossly trapped cloud of pollution.

Welcome to inversion.

In Salt Lake City, where I live, we are on Red alert ..which translates to don't excersise outside.
In Utah County, where I work, it is Yellow alert ..bad, but you can still go outside if you want.

Looking forward to cleaner air,

Pie and Coffee

One of the things that I have always loved doing is settling down into a booth at a diner and drinking loads of coffee while entertaining myself with various things including people, homework, my computer ..maybe a game or two.

In high school it was JB's, and because we got away with smoking in the back room, were too young to do much and lived in a small town, we spent countless hours there. Probably harassing the staff and making a nuisance of ourselves. But isn't that what teenagers do?

Through college it was the Village Inn. The smoking and coffee stayed the same, but now we brought homework. I don't think we were near as much of a nuisance, but on occasion we might end up there drunk in the wee hours of the morning, laughing hysterically, and recounting the nights events.

After this there was a fleet of random coffee houses throughout the towns I lived in, but every now and then a diner would fall into the mix and I would feel at home again.

I still find comfort in the thoughts of these diners, and last night I felt an overwhelming urge to go to a diner, and sit ...and drink loads of coffee while consuming pie ...that I could actually afford!

For New Years, this year, I decided to really put some thought into my resolutions for 2011. Something that in previous years I hadn't really done. 2010, although a good year, was also a very testing one for me and the process of getting out of that year and into this one, is big! I have a great feeling about this new year! For the past few month I have been thinking about what needs to change, not so much as upcoming resolution proposals, but more of an all around bettering of myself. There were two things that popped up again and again, constantly making me think about progress and change. The third came a little later, but ties, conveniently, into the first two. With high hopes for the next 12 months, here they are:

1. Exercise more do this, I plan on joining the 24 hour fitness that is across the street from my house.
2. Make more money ...while this inevitably will help with number one, I feel that it will also improve my mental happiness as well as making #3 more of a reasonable accomplishment. I plan to tackle this one by opening an etsy store to sell my at-home creations. Watch out world, here I come.
3. Cook more ...for this one I purchased a cook book, yay! ..and in this cookbook, yep, you guessed it, recipes that I want to cook!
